Passion guitar solo (G#maj9 arpeggio)

Someone asked me for help figuring out the fingering on this guitar solo the other day, so here it is. It’s also an example of how you can use an arpeggio as a bridge between notes. I have no idea how to tab it this time, sorry :-/

In a book on guitar, I once read how speed is not something you build, it’s a by-effect of accuracy … I’m finding out the hard way …

It’s a very cool insight in your soloing and I really like the scales you have, there, especially with the pimped arpeggios.

Thanks so much for all your responses and good wishes, m’little Chickadees :-) And Happy 2007 to all of you! :D

Glad you like the vids; they’re fun to make. Got plenty more up my sleeve…mwahaahah!

Vanessa, I am definitely not a singer. I totally suck. But I have this horribly annoying habit of humming improvised melody lines over any music I hear, even over imagined music I hear in my head. I wish I could stop it, because it’s REALLY annoying to anyone within earshot. I don’t even realize I’m doing it, though, so unless I can go in for electroshock therapy or find someone to smack me upside the head every time I do it, I’m doomed.

Juan, just go with the flow with your wah pedal faces…you will be OK. And it’s not like that with the tab — I really couldn’t do this one even if I wanted to. I really do SUCK at tabbing, and given the universe of possible things to spend my time on, well, learning to tab better isn’t really that important to me, unfortunately!

JoeJoe, ANY help with tab would be awesome!

Eric, I do have some recording plans for 2007, but I don’t really like to talk about future or ongoing projects until they’re almost finished—it’s bad luck.

Lori,

I’ve been taking private instruction in Classical guitar for the last three years, and only recently started branching out into other styles, beginning with Blues. Eventually, I plan on learning Metal. I just wanted to say you thank you for everything. You are an inspiration to me as a melodic metal guitarist. Every time I hear and see you play, I want to learn more. I love the work you did for Stream of Passion, and eagerly await your next video.

Thank you, and happy new year!

Hey, I came across this blog for the first time today, and since I find Lori’s weird phrasing, frantic vibrato and whatnot strangely appealing, thought I’d try to learn this solo. What with the helpful instructions and all.

Needless to say, I can’t make it sound like the original, but enjoyed the learning experience. I also made a tab (since it makes memorizing easier for me) which I linked as my website. It’s a very crude text thingy, with little regard for rhythm and of course phrasing, which is the fun part IMO. Anyway, maybe it’s helpful for someone.

Also, welcome to Helsinki, look forward to seeing you there! :)

Altruizine, thanks so much for the tab! I don’t know if it’s accurate or not (I *really* don’t do the tab thing) but your funny legend key alone was post-worthy even without the tab :-) If you go to the show in Helsinki, I’ll be able to thank you in person (beware, I might try to hug you — I scare people like that sometimes).

Tazzie — do you know yet if you’re gonna make it to Copenhagen?

Matthew, thanks for the kind words; I may get one more little vid posted before leaving for the tour in a few days. We’ll see! Anyway, classical guitar rocks — I’m sooooo not worthy…

JP, thanks. People usually either love or hate my vibrato — it rarely passes unnoticed, that’s for sure! I’m glad you don’t fall into the latter category. Some people like it until they see a video and find out that I use the bar a lot, then suddenly I’m a sucky “cheater” *rolls eyes*. Anyway, vibrato is a huge component of a player’s “voice,” dontcha think?

Icey and Ed, forget the inner geek: it’s all about embracing one’s inner capitalist ;-) No seriously, I *love* Google. Would give my left nut to work there (well, if I had a left nut, which as michael pointed out, I don’t ;-) ). I also got a Google laptop mouse for Christmas (it is the cutest thing EVER). And a book, “The Google Story.” To say that I love Google would be the understatement of the year. I’d rather give up RAMMSTEIN or chocolate or even my WAH PEDAL than Google…and that’s saying a LOT.

Eep, maybe I should have put a bit more effort into the tab after all… Well, I’m pretty confident that it’s mostly correct, if not beautiful (feel free to point out any mistakes though). You might notice that I stopped notating just about any phrasing towards the end. But, really, you SHOULD be able to at least hear the vibrato :) (sorry, promise I’m through milking the “frenetic vibrato” bit)

Lori, I might try to look you up at the show then, despite your threats!

Oh no, don’t worry about the tab, Altruizine. WTF, people need to practice using their ears as well. I really don’t get the hysteria about tab, actually. But then again, I grew up learning things by slowing down LP’s by putting my finger along the side of the turntable on the record player… :-p

I’m used to people bashing my vibrato (or loving it, go figure!) so no worries about that, either. I play to make myself happy, NOT to impress other guitar players. Playing to impress others is the PATH TO MADNESS…

And @Rob, yes Google has all kinds of fan merch available through their website. I sooo have my eye on the Google backpack…yes, I am a total Google groupie :-D

The video also clearly shows your strong left hand vibrato. As for the bar, that’s what those things are for. I remember working so hard trying to shake the 7th chords in SRV’s Texas Flood, only to discover he was using the bar. These days, Scott Henderson has the bar in his hand continuously. Jeff Beck too.

Vibrato is like a fingerprint for many players.

But here’s one for ya– do you think whammy pedals are cheating? Even wilder, I recently saw a vid of a guitar with a Korg Kaoss pad installed behind the bridge, being used for pitch control as well as several other effects.

Hey, don’t knock the tab. Sure, playing by ear is the superior choice in many many ways, but tablature is really quite useful when you need to learn something quick. Granted, 99% of guitarists don’t ever *need* to learn anything quick, and should really rely on their ears more. Which is a big part of why I learnt this whole thing.

And I didn’t mean the vibrato thing in a bad way. It’s distinctive and whatnot, and definitely works in the setting I know (=SoP). Yngwie has one of the wildest vibratos around, and IMO definitely one of the best, so you can’t really judge a vibrato with just that parameter. Would be interesting to hear Lori in a more laid back context though - I still trust it’d be good.

I played one of those Manson guitars with the ribbon controller (like Matt Bellamy of Muse uses) once. Fun, but really could only use it to make noise. That’s just me sucking though.

hey Alt,

I’m with you on the tab! Me, who’s blessed with a rather bad musical ear, has a great use for tabs. It allows me to learn a lot faster and understand the techniques other people are using when I can only hear them.

2007-01-10 03:01:28

Kristof. Although I agree with the tabs, I also agree with Lori. You can train yourself to have a better ear, and its not that hard. If anything, we should be learning things by ear, and using tabs/videos to see how close or far off we are.

Joejoe, you’re most certainly right. Since I’ve becomed more involved in music and scales and playing by ear, my ears have become (slightly) better. That doesn’t mean I can recognize a chord by year, but I know it’s the right chord when I hit it. 10 years ago, I couldn’t tell if I was playing the same chord as everyone else. That’s really bad :(

There is actual excersizes and such to improve your ear. If you like you can email me @ axisofeternity@hotmail.com

Wow, lots of comments here since last time I checked in—thanks for all the kind words, everyone! Glad to see some interesting discussions evolving amongst you as well.

Altruizine, I didn’t mean to “knock” your tab—I hope you didn’t take it that way. It sure looks good to me; I just don’t know enough to vouch for how accurate it actually is. And I didn’t take your vibrato comments in a bad way at all—no worries!

JP, I think the whole “cheating” deal is totally a guy thing. Guys seem to turn guitar playing into some kind of sport, in which the more difficult a musical passage or technique is perceived to be, the more points a player scores—even if the end result (i.e., what you hear) is the same. It’s the same way they look at bench pressing—it’s a way to impress other guys.

I look at guitar playing as something fun that I do for my own enjoyment—if others want to listen, then that’s just gravy.

If I want to use reverb, gain, delay, the wah pedal, the trem—or any other “crutches”—to achieve the sound I’m looking for, so f’n be it. Commentators on guitar forums can KISS MY METAL BUTT if they don’t approve. If a whammy pedal sounded cool and allowed me to make interesting sounds, then heck yeah, I’d use it. With impunity. With one mutant pinkie tied behind my back.

No no, feel free to knock *my* tab, just not tablature in general :) Anyhoo, I just looked at mine again, and unsuprisingly spotted a mistake. Not a big one, just an extraneous note probably left over from when I redid some fingerings.

[...] In this fantastic video, guitarist Lorinator at Play Like a Girl demonstrates how she plays a solo from one of her band’s songs. She obviously knows her theory, has a solid musical background to draw from (presumably from years of lessons) and has technical skill. There’s even a tablature provided for the solo at the end of the post. I wish I could make every student rock musician in America watch this. [...]

Hey Lori,

It is so refreshing to have discovered you. Like my old playing, you remind me of a younger Alex Skolnick in a way, when he was with Testament, but much better! I would have to describe my playing as more like John Petrucci. Listening to you play has taken me back to my melodic roots. You make arpeggios sound melodic and not so mechanical by slidding and adding the 7 or 9. You have inspired me with new ideas. Your technique is beautiful; it is very clean and enchanting. I encourage you to keep up the good work!

Hi Lori,

I am the owner of a member group on a goth/industrial website dedicated to guitar players and all genres of metal music, and other genres as well. We have a few female players among us and they never really got treated as equals amongst some of the “purists” of our group. You are such a great example of exactly what I have been trying to tell them. That a female can be just as good, if not better.

You are really good, even better than I, and that is the reason why I linked this little tutorial of yours to my members. I wanted to show them that it doesnt matter who you are, where you are from, or what color your guitar is, you really can be just as good as the next guy.

I quote from my own post to my members: “She is better than 90% of you guys, so shut up, and learn.” The female members of our group, and even some of the more experienced guys, thank and applaud you. Keep going.

Oh and we forgive you for your little major/minor explanation errors and bad tabbing, we suck at it too :p You play beautifully, and deserve every props you get.

Take it easy.
