The difference between the "E backing" and the others is that the "E backing" is always just an E pedal tone. The "modal backings" take the first note of the modal scale as their pedal tone. So if you take the Locrian example, the "modal backing" is an F# pedal tone. The best way to get a handle on this is to just play your standard E-minor patterns over different pedal tones. Here is list of the pedal tones to play your "E-minor shapes" over to experience the sounds of different modes: E - aeolian F# - Locrian G - Ionian A - Dorian B - Phrygian C - Lydian D - Myxolydian Hope that clears things up! Glad you enjoyed the post.

Just loved the post! Modes were always confusing to me, I even have decided to put it aside for a while. But you explained it really well. Thanks! My only doubt is how can I change the tonic flavor of the backing? What is the difference between the chords you used on the "E backing" and the "Modal Backing"? Could you give me an example? =* Hey Lori!
