MIDI gremlins are ruining my day

AAUGH!

She must be using Line6 Edit too.

I get an entire free day with nothing else to do but clean the apartment and work on music, and I can’t get stupid Line6 edit to recognize the Pod pro on my Audigy 2’s MIDI Port 1. I need to use MIDI port 1 (the one in the back) because if I use MIDI port 2, I will have cables coming out the front of my computer that the Clumsinator can trip over. And when the Clumsinator trips over stuff, stuff tends to get broken…

I can hook up my keyboard to MIDI Port 2 and it works fine (tried it in Sonar). The Pod works fine on MIDI Port 1. What gives? I’m pullin’ my hair out here, and getting crabbier by the minute.

If anyone out there knows how to fix this, you’ll be makin’ my day…

Put the CPU facing backwards? Nah, maybe not….

Sorry, in this case, I’m more “part of the problem”. But I have great tips on apartmen cleaning though!

Congrats on your new iPod!

Hi Lori.
First of all, please do *not* pull your beautiful hair out! ;-)
Secondly, I’m afraid I cannot help you with this problem, though I got the confidence that you can handle it just by using the port at the front. Just be careful and pull the cables out when you don’t use ‘em…

Btw, can’t your friend help cleaning the apartment? ;-)

Hugs and take care,
Robbo

Thanks, Juan and Gwen! Robbo, believe me, having the cables in front is an option only for emergencies. After working a 13-hour day at my normal job, I really can’t deal mentally with having to set stuff up when I finally come home and want to play. That’s waaaay too much effort – it has to be ready to go with a flip of the switch, or I won’t do it. So using the port in the back (it’s GOT to work — if it will work with my keyboard then it has to work with the Pod). But thanks for the vote of confidence!

Yay for MIDI ;-)

Don’t worry too long about it and stop pulling your hear, unless you want to end up like me that is. ;-)

Last time I freaked out because of MIDI, I’d mixed up the IN and OUT/THRU cables on my V-Amp2, and yes, they were labelled.
I was absolutely sure the cables where connected the right way, since I checked them numerous times. But noooooo…

Just hang in there. I’m sure you’ll manage to solve this puzzle eventually.

Take care.

Hope you manage to solve it.. and cables out of the front of your computer are evil indeed!! I used to have my external harddrive plugged into one of the front usb ports. all was fine until I decided to plug it out and visit a friend and copy a bunch of video files. What I found out is that the usb port of my computer had broken.. prolly before already and a tab of plastic was stuck in the connector. Pulled the tab out and well ever since then when I try to insert something into that usb port my computer gets a high voltage pulse.. so I just taped that up and plugged the external disc into the back. I only use the other front port for downloading pictures from my camera now (plug cable into camera, into port, download, put away cable again) So yeah cables on the front of the pc are evil!

I’m also a bit confused by your numbering of the MIDI ports :) I’m assuming that …

1. You have a Midi Port up front (drive bay) and one on the back of the pc, on the back of the card.
2. Your keyboard works fine on either MIDI port
3. your POD works fine on the front-port, but “gives the pipe to Maarten” (ask Marcela if she knows that Dutch saying) when plugged into the back.

A very stupid question up front: Did you put the cable connector marked “IN” in the “OUT” port of the Pod? You prolly know this, but I’m just checking.

If your keyboard works fine but your POD doesn’t, there’s a very slight chance that it’s a MIDI channel setup thing? I remember there’s a whole chapter on MIDI setup in the back of the manual (What? WHAT? Yes, I RTFM’d …)

Have you switched cables? Maybe when of your cables is dead, has a broken plug or is awaiting directions from Beelzebuub.

Have you tried connecting them 1 at a time? Maybe the port in frond == the port in the back, meaning you can only attach/activate 1 device at a time?

With some MIDI devices, you have to connect the device, turn off the PC if it wasn’t turned off already, then turn it back on. If I remember correctly, that’s how I got my FlexIIXL MIDI interface.

If all of that doesn’t work, I’m afraid your left to your own (MIDI) devices …

Kristof, thanks for being so helpful!
Your assumptions are correct.

I connect the “in” on the cable to the “out” of the Pod. Tried it the other way just in case – no joy.

Have not tried to switch cables, but the cable works for the keyboard, so it can’t be broken. It’s one of those Y-cables with a joystick-type connector on the computer end, and two normal MIDI connectors on the device end.

In all my experiments, I’ve only connected to one port at a time.

The Pod is set to MIDI channel 1 according to the FM. I have R’d the FM too ;-)

The only thing I haven’t tried is booting with the stuff connected. Will give that a try. Will also try new cables just in case.

Worst case scenario I can post a Q on the Line6 forum and see if anyone bites.

for the record I have nothing to do with said proverb about giving pipes to me.. that’s a different guy.

Hi,

don’t know if that MIDI issue is solved. But I had a related problem two years ago with a digitech machine. Couldn’t get it work with a Y-cable at the joystick-port. I just bought another sound card and everything went fine (if you’re having an expensive soundcard, maybe a MIDI/Firewire-interface is an option).

BTW: “13-hour day” – don’t you think it’s a modern art of slavery? *kidding* What are you doing for a living? Well, there are plenty folks without a job and I’m one of those… In my earlier days I worked hard six days a week (bricklayer, you know?) and the guitars often tended to stay alone. Now I have much time (read: many, many, many time) but no incentive. Strange.

Best, Kai

Kai, I gave up on the MIDI problems for now (too much other stuff to work on!), and am just plugging into the jacks in the front (the ones that work). It’s just an Audigy 2 sound card, nothing special. I’m in the market for a new one, but don’t have time to research that right now so I’m sticking with what I have.

As for work, I do the kind of consulting work where there are no clear criteria for what is considered “a good job,” let alone a “kick ass” job. I only get paid for contact hours with the clients, which often doesn’t even come close to covering the hourse I need to put in behind the scenes to make them happy. So I just work work work until I figure there’s nothing more that is humanly possible (for me!) to do, or until I burn out, whichever comes first.

I could probably “get by” by doing less, but then my guilty conscience would keep me awake at night.

Have you enabled the midi port on the computer?
I have line 6 gear box which I use with my Pod XT Pro. it should be similair to the Pod Pro that you are using.
Try going into Edit, preferances, onto the midi setup Tab and selecting the midi port.
It could be labeled as either midi ports 1 and 2, or even 0 and 1.
It will most likly have written underneath the drop down menus “No device detected”. If you change it to the correct port it should detect the pod.

Does your pod not connect via USB? Thats how I connect mine, makes it alot more hassel free, and I have have both my Midi devices and Pod plugged in at the same time (granted I also use a Digi design M box as my midi device…) but the principal is the same.

If you require any further help you can email me at
axisofeternity@hotmail.com

I might look into the Edit software and connecting via midi to see how it all works.

I hope this has been a help to you =).

Hi JoeJoe,
Thanks so much your advice! What would I do without this blog? *Goes all bashful and girlie*

I am pretty sure I’ve tried every kind of preferences that the Line6 Edit has to offer, and tried all of the available ports. But no matter what I try when I have the midi cables plugged into the rear MIDI ports, I get a message saying that there’s nothing connected. I’d have to try it again to tell you the exact text of the error message. Anyway, I’ve got it working through the front MIDI ports now, so that’s something!

Ok, determined not to be beaten by a midi problem… I got out the manual for my pod….just in case you havent tried this, if you are running windows XP, try this….

Plug in and turn the Pod on (into the back connection)

Go into the control panel

Go to “Sounds and Audio Devices”

Click on the “audio” tab

Under “midi music play back” there will be a drop down menu.

It should have “microsoft GS wave table SW synth”

It should also have a second option, which will be something like “Pod” “Line 6″ “external device”
whatever it is, select that.

Now try it.

If this fails to work, then Im all out of ideas.

I do however know, with soundblaster type sound cards it will have more than one midi driver. It will always default to the internal synth, not the external MIDI port.
If your running a diffrent windows let me know which one, and Ill see what I can come up with.

=)

Thanks, JoeJoe! I’ve been too busy working this week to try it out, but it sounds promising. There should be some time for me to try it out tomorrow — will post the results as soon as they’re in!

Hey Lori,

I’ve got a Tascam US-144 which has midi-ports. It’s working wonders for me right now. Not a solution, but definitely a good work-around.

regards,

Kristof

Not sure if you have given it a go yet =). If you have, I hope it has worked.

Also, I hope you havnt been working too hard that you havn’t had time for music. A healthy balanced life is the key to success…. or at least thats what I read in a magazine….
