I’m a little late to the entry. My left hand measurements are about the same as Sylvain’s.

On the subject of tasteful shredders, in addition to our lovely and talented hostess and those already mentioned, I’d add three of my favorite players: Allan Holdsworth (who we’re going to hear next Friday), Eric Johnson, and Steve Morse.

Oh, there’s a lot of really good shredders out there! There’s a lot more uninspired shredders though. Michael Angelo something something is one of the uninspired ones. Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Jennifer Batten, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Joey Tafolla, Richie Kotzen, Tony Macalpine … They’re all very good, very fast players with a lot of feeling. And they’re composing songs as well, instead of just doing the 200 bpm stereo-tapping and the obligatory endless sweeping …

Although it’s NOT what I’m looking for, that Bob Zabek clip is a very good example of (tasteful) feel and shred !

I think shred became unpopular at the end of the 80s and start of the 90′s, when everyone had heard Malmsteen, knew what he was doing, and got bored of it.

Really, only now has shred started to become interesting, seeing as people have suddenly decided “Hey, I can shred AND play with feeling, and do everything else, I just need to make it all tasteful”.
Still very few of those players around though….

Yes, absolutely – I have nothing but respect for that man !

Also, a very good example of the fact that you don’t have to be a shred “dead-head” to make (in my opinion,) an invaluable contribution to what guitar players are all about !

I’d SO much rather listen to the ferocity of his riffs, (AND in fact, his solos) than I would, listening to yet another mindless (but none the less, talented) shredder !

I really have a feeling y’know, that it won’t be too long, before “shred” becomes as tedious and unfashionable – (like… that’s important – NOT, but y’ know ?!) – as “tapping” became in the ’80′s/’90′s ! – A novelty that soon wears off ! …. (Although EVERY style has it’s place…!)

As I say… ’tis only MY opinion !
