Comparing sizes…results!
Who would have thought that comparing sizes would be so much fun
Thanks to all of you who contributed your measurements.
The Most Mutant Pinkie award goes to…
ME, for my wee little 49-mm nubbin. Now I definitely feel entitled to complain about my useless pinkie!
The Itty-bitty Girlie Hand award goes to…
Kristof for his 130-mm index-to-pinkie span (and because I liked the ink blotch). Here is the pic he sent:

The Pinkie Respect award for most intimidating pinkie goes to Maarten (aka Icey), for his majestic 73-mm Pinkie of Doom. Here is his drawing:

The Most Elegant Drawing award goes to Sylvain, for the delicate lines of his drawing:

The The Castle Anthrax award goes to Andy (who keeps me in line around here) for, well, check it out yourselves (I’m superimposed in pink):

Woohoo! I win … I … think I’m happy
Is there a secret Mutant Pinky greeting that I should be aware of?
Well… I’m astonished !
I was CONVINCED that my fingers would have been the smallest ?!
I DO wish I could have submitted a drawing though… but my measurements WERE precise !
But NOW, my problem is… why the Hell is it, that every time I see a (quality) guitar player… their fingers look so much longer, and more “spindly” than mine ?! I’ve had a thing about this for ages ! ! !
Could it be that:
My fingers are, er… not as slim as they could/should be ?!
Or p’haps, I have rather large palms? – Thus giving the illusion that my fingers NEVER seem to look as long as they actually are ?! Which might explain why m’ Pinkie to Thumb stretch isn’t too bad – (Which is superfluous really, ‘cos that doesn’t help at all when playing !) Oh well…
Kristof…
Congratulations !? / Commiserations ?!
Lori…
Thanks for all the fun ! – You’re truly “one of a kind !”
Love y’ Lots !
Wowww, this is cool!!
I missed the opportunity to send my hand though… Everyone says I’ve got flexible fingers, but I’m not sure 170mm from pointer to pinkie and my fingers are not reaaaally long, well…
Very funny post Lori
Hugs
Cool, an award !
Interestings results.
Anyway, Shawn Lane said something like “It’s the mind that guide the fingers”. Do you agree ? I guess our brain knows how to use our fingers and will find a way to make the music we hear in our mind.
Hehe, this is fun to see.
But like Eva said, I was also too late with sending my measurements (geesh, what a sentence). Currently, I’m too busy with work for school. But surely I’ll keep on reading your Blog
Hugs and PR, Rob
Whaha I sooo like that.. *copies ’73mm pinkie of Doom’ to his msn name*
Just remember Django. See the video link below– the guy ain’t a shredder but geez anyway!
http://stratoblogster.blogspot.com/2006/12/you-can-play-guitar-if-you-really-want.html
That guy has more feeling in his little toe than a lot of guitarists have in their entire body!
But … has anyone ever wondered how that guy sets up?
“WHITE RABBITS – WHITE RABBITS – WHITE RABBITS !”
Don’t forget Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath. No fingertips on his fretting hand.
Joe:
Yes, absolutely – I have nothing but respect for that man !
Also, a very good example of the fact that you don’t have to be a shred “dead-head” to make (in my opinion,) an invaluable contribution to what guitar players are all about !
I’d SO much rather listen to the ferocity of his riffs, (AND in fact, his solos) than I would, listening to yet another mindless (but none the less, talented) shredder !
I really have a feeling y’know, that it won’t be too long, before “shred” becomes as tedious and unfashionable – (like… that’s important – NOT, but y’ know ?!) – as “tapping” became in the ’80′s/’90′s ! – A novelty that soon wears off ! …. (Although EVERY style has it’s place…!)
As I say… ’tis only MY opinion !
That’s it ! ! !
I think shred became unpopular at the end of the 80s and start of the 90′s, when everyone had heard Malmsteen, knew what he was doing, and got bored of it.
Really, only now has shred started to become interesting, seeing as people have suddenly decided “Hey, I can shred AND play with feeling, and do everything else, I just need to make it all tasteful”.
Still very few of those players around though….
JoeJoe:
Hmm… I agree ! – VERY few of those players around !
Although it’s NOT what I’m looking for, that Bob Zabek clip is a very good example of (tasteful) feel and shred !
Lori – “Oh no…!”
I hope I haven’t (unintentionally) started a “favourite-shredder” list ?! (lol !)
Oh, there’s a lot of really good shredders out there! There’s a lot more uninspired shredders though. Michael Angelo something something is one of the uninspired ones. Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Jennifer Batten, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Joey Tafolla, Richie Kotzen, Tony Macalpine … They’re all very good, very fast players with a lot of feeling. And they’re composing songs as well, instead of just doing the 200 bpm stereo-tapping and the obligatory endless sweeping …
I forgot to put Lori in that last list!
Kristof.
Answer to your first post there. Very true. But I tend to find even some of those players get rather boring. And seem to just follow the same deal.
Answer to your second post.
Suck job =P.
Although it is true! =P
I’m a little late to the entry. My left hand measurements are about the same as Sylvain’s.
On the subject of tasteful shredders, in addition to our lovely and talented hostess and those already mentioned, I’d add three of my favorite players: Allan Holdsworth (who we’re going to hear next Friday), Eric Johnson, and Steve Morse.
Here’s an amusing solution for having small hands and playing piano:
