I couldn’t help myself

I love Yngwie’s playing. Always have. He was a huge inspiration to me during my first years as a guitarist, and today he is one of the handful of players whom I still enjoy listening to. In recent years it’s become fashionable to bash him, and I can kind of understand why because he makes himself such an easy target. But when the dude is on, he is on. He also earned some major brownie points with me when “rose above it” in Tufnel-esque fashion by calling his album “Unleash the (fockin) Fury.” That still makes me giggle.

In the 80s, Yngwie single-handedly redefined heavy rock guitar. But unlike other revolutionary players like Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen, he’s hardly a household name. He’s certainly ~~notorious~~ well-known among heavy rock and metal guitarists, but let’s put it this way: even my dear old Granny knows who Jimi Hendrix is, but she’s never heard of Yngwie.

When my BF and I were goofing around the other day we came up with the idea for these shirts…and, well, I just couldn’t help myself — I had to share the giggles with you:

Eight random facts about LL

This post is in response to my being tagged for the “8 random facts about me” meme by Matt at Electric Guitar Review and Cary at Guitar-stuff.net. For those not familiar with blogger culture, a blog meme is just a particular topic or question that is passed along from blog to blog. That way the blogging community ends up having one big mutha conversation about the same topic.

The point of this particular meme is to divulge eight random facts about yourself, then “tag” eight other bloggers to do the same. You tag them by linking to them, which sends an automatic notification link that they can see in their blog’s admin panel.

So without further ado, here are eight random facts about me (betcha can’t wait):

If a task is more than moderately interesting, I’d rather learn how to it myself than have someone do it for me.
Because of no. 1, I know how to build bicycle wheels from scratch.
Because of no. 1, I haven’t been bored since I was nine years old.
I can’t stand hot, humid weather…
…or cold, clammy socks.
I’d move anywhere in the world if Google offered me a job — even a job as cleaning lady.
I sometimes dream that I’m best friends with Madonna, and that we get up to all kinds of zany antics together. It’s always a disappointment to wake up.
My first crush was at the age of 6, on the cartoon character Speed Racer. Nowadays I’d be more likely to fall for the mysterious Racer X.

Guitar solos quiz for non-guitar players

I just scored 100% on Mental Floss’s Guitar Solos Quiz. Surprising, because there were 4 solos that I had to guess. The others were easy because I’d heard the songs on the radio a gazillion times.

Many guitarists would probably think that some of these solos are pretty dire. But I’ll bet my favorite wah pedal that the average non-musician listener doesn’t notice or care (unless they have a good ear and the solo is out of tune).

If you are lucky enough to play a guitar solo on a huge hit song, your solo becomes part of the collective cultural consciousness, worthy of being included in a quiz like this one no matter what other guitarists might think of it. That is eminently cool. And it’s yet one more reason to play what makes you happy rather than trying to impress other guitarists (and give up because you can’t).
